When undertaking this type of cross-sectional study, one should be careful to undertake it over an appropriate time period. Hypothetically, if the results shown in Table 6.3 had been undertaken over a 3-month period in winter, one might have had a different prevalence of sports injuries and possibly a higher prevalence of falls in the elderly. Thus one should take care to use an appropriate time period. The other problem that relates to cross-sectional studies is the difficulty of standardising the population used in the study. The patients in the study shown in Table 6.3 were from a defined area where only one hospital treats fractures [4]. This, however, is rare, and, especially in large towns, it is difficult to accurately assess the incidence and prevalence of fractures if patients can go to two or three different hospitals. These difficulties will be discussed later in this chapter.
